DisplaySearch has revealed shipments of 274.6M main displays and 58.6M sub-displays for mobile phones with total revenues of $3.3B in the Q2'06 Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast Report, a comprehensive examination of the mobile phone display industry. Main display shipment share by technology is shown in Table 1. Active Matrix displays are now more than 73% of the total shipments, up from 63.5% one year ago. This trend is expected to continue, and by Q3'06, the Active Matrix share is forecast to reach 78%.
The report details display shipments by 22 suppliers and display purchases by 20 mobile phone makers in terms of display technology, size, resolution, color and ASP for a seven-quarter period. Value chains are included showing quarterly purchases and shipments between set makers and display makers, broken down by display technology.
The leading mobile phone panel makers were Samsung SDI, Sanyo Epson, Philips, Sharp and Wintek.
Panel revenue leaders in Q1'06 were Sanyo Epson, Sharp, Samsung SDI, Philips and Samsung SEC with shares of 14.8%, 14.2%, 13.1%, 10.8% and 9.1%, respectively. Samsung SDI and Philips are strong in CSTN LCDs, while the other three companies are the leaders in AMLCD production.
DisplaySearch uses the display purchases by mobile phone set makers to forecast mobile phone sell-in on a quarterly basis. Table 3 shows the market share for the top six set makers and the change in share Q/Q and Y/Y. Motorola's success with both the RAZR and low-end phones has enabled it to cut into Nokia's lead, reducing the share difference by 5.9% Y/Y in Q1'06 and adding a projected additional 1.9% share improvement in Q2'06. Due to targeting the low end, Motorola is now the leader in MSTN display based phones with quarterly purchases of 11.7M vs. 10.8M for Nokia. In Q1'06, Samsung and LG lost share Y/Y while Sony Ericsson gained 1.5%. Samsung and LG are both expected to have slight gains in share Q/Q in Q2'06 as BenQ-Siemens struggles to gain control of their recent merger.
According to DisplaySearch Senior Vice President Barry Young, "The mobile phone display market continues to grow, paced by the higher end displays of 2.0” and above. In Q1'06, Sharp introduced the first VGA resolution display phone. The 2.4" diagonal device has 333 ppi, the highest density commercial display ever. Samsung announced that it also would have a VGA based phone indicating that the battle for the high end and the mobile TV market is heating up."
