Rambus Acquires Digital Core IP

This multi-faceted deal provides Rambus with digital controller IP to complement its existing line of high-speed interface physical (PHY) layer products. This agreement enables Rambus to deliver complete physical and digital layer IP for high-speed interface designs. Specifically, Rambus is acquiring digital core IP compatible with PCI Express, Ethernet, SPI-4, USB and SATA protocols, as well as products that are currently in development and will be made available based on customer demand. Rambus will be extending offers to a number of GDA Technologies employees, both in San Jose, California and Bangalore, India that are affiliated with the design and development of these digital IP cores.

"By adding these IP cores from GDA to our existing line of high-speed interface technologies, we are very well positioned to provide a broad portfolio of easy to use, customer proven and tightly integrated solutions to our customer base," said Samir Patel, vice president of engineering at Rambus. "In addition, a team of digital IP developers in India and the U.S. will join Rambus. Prakash Bare, vice president of GDA's IP business unit, will also move to Rambus as general manager of the Digital IP business. This enables us to accelerate the expansion of our design center in Bangalore, India and gives us an additional ability to attract top engineering talent in that region."

As part of this agreement, GDA becomes a reseller of these digital controllers and will offer this IP along with its IP and IP-enabled services. Additionally, GDA may use the controllers in custom designs through a technology licensing agreement. GDA Technologies will continue to provide Electronic Design Services, Semiconductor IP, Verification IP and value-added IP-enabled services.

This state-of-the-art 90 nm process will enable Elpida to produce 512 Megabit DDR2 SDRAM devices, with an small chip size of 69.9 mm2, allowing more devices per wafer for increased unit output.
DDR2 memory controllers Patent License Agreement Rambus Inc. today announced it has signed a patent license agreement with NEC Electronics Corporation that allows the development and manufacture of memory controllers based on various Rambus innovations. The agreement is for a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal or extension. The license's scope covers memory controllers compatible with SDR, DDR and DDR2 SDRAM as well as future memory controller innovations. Rambus will receive royalties on sales of licensed products.
Second litigation against Infineon lauched by MOSAID

    Mosaid Technologies Incorporated today announced that it has initiated litigation against Infineon Technologies AG and three of its U.S.-based affiliates for infringement of three of MOSAID's United States patents, U.S. Patent Nos. 6,657,919 and 6,057,676 and U.S. Reissued Patent No. RE 37,641. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division.

Infineon extends its DDR2 Micro-DIMM offering with 1GB modules, which will further accelerate the manufacturing of lighter and smaller sub-notebooks with enhanced functionalities and battery lifetime.
 



 Infineon extends its DDR2 Micro-DIMM offering with 1GB modules, which will further accelerate the manufacturing of lighter and smaller sub-notebooks with enhanced functionalities and battery lifetime. Samples were shipped to selected customers. The JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Council) compliant Micro-DIMMs are only 65 per cent of the size of equal capacity SO-DIMMs (Small Outline DIMMs) used for conventional notebooks. Micro-DIMMs use a new 214-pin “mezzanine connector” technique that reduces the size of the module and the area covered by the connector by about 35 per cent. Additionally, the use of low-power DDR2 components will decrease power consumption of the module by approximately 50 percent which allows either extended battery lifetime or smaller battery size in sub-notebook computers.

The Infineon 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMMs are manufactured with 18 dual-die 2Gbit DDR2 components that achieve the currently maximum density of 2GB with a thickness of 3.8mm at the standard 30mm height.
 


 Infineon released first engineering samples of the 2GB DDR2 dual-die based SO-DIMMs for next generation high-end notebooks and laptop PCs which require a reduced module thickness and height due to their smaller dimensions. The Infineon 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMMs are manufactured with 18 dual-die 2Gbit DDR2 components that achieve the currently maximum density of 2GB with a thickness of 3.8mm at the standard 30mm height. The module is organized in 2 ranks and operates at 1.8 Volt.
