IP and Technology Patent Licensing Agreement Microsoft Corp. and Alpine Electronics Inc. have signed an agreement to cross-license the companies’ respective patent portfolios. The deal will further the development of each company’s current and future product lines. The agreement expands the relationship between Alpine and Microsoft to promote the exchange of information and the incorporation of patented technologies in car navigation systems and other consumer electronics products. Since 2002, Alpine has been adopting Microsoft’s automotive-specific operating system, Windows Automotive, on almost all its navigation systems for the aftermarket and automotive OEM factory installations.

Fraunhofer researchers will be presenting several new techniques at CeBIT in Hanover on March 4 through 9. You don’t have to know everything – you just need to know where to find it. So goes the popular saying. But that is becoming increasingly difficult in today’s age of digital information. Knowledge is now distributed worldwide, so how can you find the information you seek? Searching the Internet or a corporate network often provides little help. You either receive thousands of hits or none at all. The problem is that search programs can only understand individual terms, and cannot grasp the relationship between different words, let alone the meaning, i.e. the semantics, of whole sentences. If you enter the word ‘web’ into Google, Yahoo or MSN, it makes no difference whether you mean a spider’s web, the World Wide Web, or a woven fabric.

Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization, AMTSO More than 40 security software technologists and anti-malware testers from around the world recently met in Bilbao, Spain to formalize the charter of the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization, or AMTSO. The formation of AMTSO has been driven by industry-wide concern about the increasing mismatch between what anti-malware technologies actually do, and the testing methodologies used to evaluate them. As anti-malware solutions become more complex, many existing tests are unable to evaluate product effectiveness properly, resulting in product reviews that are sometimes incomplete, inaccurate and misleading.
Software Freedom Conservancy Welcomes New Members The Software Freedom Conservancy welcomes as its newest two members, the Bongo and Twisted projects. By joining the Conservancy, Bongo and Twisted are entitled the benefits of non-profit incorporation. The Conservancy provides administrative and organizational services so that the developers can focus on the software, and still receive the benefits of 501(c)(3) non-profit corporate existence, such as charitable donations.
