Verizon Joined The LiMo Foundation™

Verizon has joined the LiMo Foundation™ as a Core member and will fill the final seat on LiMo’s board of directors. By participating in LiMo, Verizon hopes to help LiMo unify the mobile industry around openness and Linux as the key enablers to lowering development costs.

LiMo Foundation is open to all vendors and service providers in the mobile communications marketplace, including device manufacturers, operators, chipset manufacturers, integrators and independent software vendors. Verizon Wireless joins the foundation’s other 39 members in working within LiMo’s transparent governance model to shape the evolution of the LiMo Platform™, while remaining entirely free to deliver their own compelling and differentiated services to mobile customers.

Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ: CLWR) and Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) have entered into a definitive agreement to combine their next generation wireless broadband businesses to form a new wireless communications company.

The new company, which will be named Clearwire, will be focused on expediting the deployment of the first nationwide mobile WiMAX network to provide a true mobile broadband experience for consumers, small businesses, medium and large enterprises, public safety organizations and educational institutions. The new Clearwire expects to dramatically enhance the speed and manner in which customers access all that the Internet has to offer at home, in the office and on the road.

Some 62% of adult Americans have taken advantage of mobile access to digital data and tools. The Pew Internet Project’s new report, entitled Mobile Access to Data and Information, examines mobile access in two ways and finds that:

# 58% of adult Americans have used a cell phone or personal digital assistant (PDA) to do at least one of ten mobile non-voice data activities, such as texting, emailing, taking a picture, looking for maps or directions, or recording video.

Algorithms For Wireless Networks

Dutch researcher Peter Korteweg has developed algorithms for wireless networks. The algorithms focus on optimising communication to a central point in such networks, for example, by minimising processing times and the communication costs.

An optimisation problem describes a situation in which an optimal solution is sought from among all possible solutions. Mathematicians study an optimisation problem to find a general method for solving such a problem; such a method is called an algorithm.

Lithium-Ion Battery Prototype

Fraunhofer researchers will be presenting a novel lithium-ion battery at Hannover Messe on April 21 - 25. It is based on a polymer electrolyte, which is – unlike the liquid electrolyte in conventional lithium-ion batteries – not inflammable. A test set-up for redox flow batteries will also be on display at the show. This makes it possible to compare different redox systems in a single test set-up.
